Q1. I would like to change my dog onto Winalot®. Can I just stop his old food?

Any change of diet should be done gradually to prevent your dog getting an upset stomach. We would recommend introducing Winalot® to each meal in increasing amounts while reducing the amount of the old food. This should be done over a period of 7 - 10 days.

Q2. I have heard that dry food is better for my dog, but he loves canned food. Which is the best for him?

Both Winalot® canned and Winalot® Dry Complete are nutritionally complete foods, so neither is better than the other. Each will provide all the protein, fat, vitamins and minerals your dog needs.

Q3. My puppy is 4 months old and still toilets in the house. Is this normal?

Some puppies can take up to 6 months to become fully toilet trained: it all depends on the individual puppy and the time you can devote to training. When your puppy goes in the right place, offer a reward straight away to reinforce the fact they're got it right.

Q4. My puppy loves eating the same Winalot® as my older dog. Why do I need to use a puppy food?

Puppies are growing very quickly, so they have different nutritional requirements to adults. Puppies need more protein to develop healthy muscles, more fat for energy, and higher but carefully controlled levels of minerals, such as calcium, for strong bone development.

Q5. How can I stop my dog pulling on the lead when we go out for a walk?

Most dogs love their walks and get very excited by the thought of going to the park and exploring those exciting smells! With careful training, dogs can learn to take their time and enjoy walking with you. And we always recommend joining a training class where you can learn to teach your dog.

Q6. I am the proud owner of a new 8 week old puppy. When can I take him out for a walk?

Your puppy should not come into contact with unvaccinated dogs (directly or indirectly) until he has completed his own course of vaccinations - the first set is due at around 8 weeks old and the second a few weeks after that.

Q7. I have a 6 month old bitch. When should I have her neutered?

Neutering a female dog is generally called 'spaying' or 'ovariohysterectomy'. It prevents a bitch coming into season, so she will not be at risk of having an unwanted litter. Neutering also helps to prevent a serious infection of the uterus. A bitch can usually be spayed from 6 months of age - but not during season. Your vet will be able advise you on the best time for your own dog.

Q8. Is it OK to feed all the flavours in the Winalot® range, or should I stick to one?

Dogs can enjoy all the flavours in the Winalot® range - they usually like variety as much as we do. However, all dogs are individuals and some may be more sensitive than others, so when you feed a new flavour only give a small amount at first.

Q9. I think my dog is overweight but I don't have any scales. Can I find out any other way?

Your vet should have scales that you can use, but you can also check by assessing his body condition.

  • Run your hands along his ribs - you should just be able to feel them under a firm covering of flesh.

  • If you cannot feel them, your dog could probably lose a few pounds.

  • Or if they stick out, he might need to start eating a bit more!

  • There should also be a waist between the ribs and hips and the tummy should be tucked up.

Q10. Should Winalot® Complete be fed dry, or should I add water?

Winalot® Complete is designed to be fed dry, although you should make sure plenty of fresh water is always on hand (or paw). Dogs on a dry diet need to drink more than those eating wet canned food. At the same time, there is no harm in adding a little water if your dog prefers it, but avoid adding anything else so as not to upset the nutritional balance.
