Learning is fun
Training your dog can be a fun and rewarding experience. Dogs are fast learners, but rely on you to learn how to behave. Even older dogs can learn new skills, but the job is much easier if you begin working with them from an early age. Training helps you to nurture the relationship between the two of you, allowing you to spend time together and forge a deeper bond.
Teaching the common commands
The basic five commands - come, sit, stay, heel and lie down - help to shape a good canine citizen. They can be taught from around eight weeks old, initially with one person to begin with so puppies know who they are working with and what to expect. As they get more familiar with what is being asked, you can introduce more 'trainers', but make sure you are all using the same verbal and hand signals. Having more than one trainer also has the advantage of ensuring 'pupils' know they have to be obedient to other people too.
Elementary obedience classes are highly recommended. They're good fun and it's enjoyable to learn with other people.
