Distance:
5 miles

Location:
Berwick Upon Tweed, Northumberland

Description:
First fortified in 1296 by Edward I, Berwick has seen more than its share of battle over the centuries. The need for a garrison only diminished after the Napoleonic Wars, but by 1827 the ramparts had been turned into a walk.

With few gradients and only a few steps to negotiate here and there, this circular route through and around Berwick is a relaxing and fascinating stroll through history. The refreshments and amenities of the town centre are conveniently close.
