North East
High and Deep on Yorkshire's Coast ?taking in the contrasts of the North Yorkshire coastline
Difficulty:
Distance:
8.5 miles
Location:
Staithes, near Whitby, North Yorkshire
Description:
From the beautiful heights of the sea cliffs to the abandoned, Tolkeinesque-sounding Grinkle Ironstone Mine, this is a walk of contrasts. The now-peaceful fishing village of Staithes is rich with stories of smugglers, pirates, the Spanish Armada and Captain Cook and the local Jet is still mined for jewellery. The beautiful, refreshing walk takes in farmland, woods and cliff tops with some steep sections along the way. It's often muddy, so bring the dog-towel!
